In India Trans genders are given a lot of respect, having said that people are also familiar that Trans genders are considered to be auspicious when a new born enters into the world, it is believed that their blessings will bring prosperity and a long life for the child. In these recent years there’s been a huge uproar from masses, Trans community to give jobs to trans genders, to give them a status/identity in the society.

It’s not new that many of must have seen trans genders on the streets and asking for money because they don’t have jobs and that is what needs to change. The Trans community has faced several issues, they haven’t been given equal opportunity, lack of educations, resources.

These recent years have been about equal rights and saying no to discrimination, having said that we still do not see Trans genders around us as often as we should. There have been several social media campaigns, on ground campaigns and much more.  People have definitely formed a notion that Trans Genders are either beggars or prostitutes, however it is really important to make ourselves and everyone else around us aware in regards with the initiatives taken for the Trans community

The Modi Government is going all out to support and uplift the Trans genders, setting up a National portal, giving them identity, education and every other need of theirs will be fulfilled -

  • A National Portal for Trans genders has been set up by The Union Minister of Social Justice and empowerment, Thaawarchand Gehlot making sure that the trans community is given the right to expression, privacy stating that identity is important and by handing over transgender certificate and identity cards comes under the protection of rights act 2019, the portal will also address the grievances registered by trans community. Many more schemes and policies have come into effect under the leadership of Honourable Prime Minister Modi.

National Portal for Trans genders is also available in several languages: Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, Marathi, Odisha, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujrati, Bengali, English.

  • On 13th February 2022, Modi Government launched a scheme ‘SMILE’ support for marginalized individuals for livelihood and enterprise which will provide rehabilitation to Tran’s community and will pull them out of begging. ‘’As a progressive and developing society, it is our duty to respect the identity and dignity of all sections of the society. The Ministry has ensured that each and every need of the Trans community along with people engaged in begging will be taken care of in the most professional manner. The provision of national portal and helpline will provide necessary information and solutions to the problems of the Trans genders and the people who are begging, Virendra Kumar, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

An amount of Rs 365 crore has been put into implementing the scheme from the year 2021-2022 to 2025-2026 providing the Trans community with identity, medical facilities, employment opportunities, education and a home.

The Trans community has faced several issues in their lives, they struggle so much, and being neglected by their parents and even the society they often have no place to go to and are forced to beg on the streets. There have been several Initiatives and developments toward the Trans community in India

  • In Maharashtra a shelter home named Garima Greh was inaugurated for the Trans gender community to give them a head start, inaugurated with 25 beds on rent facility. The initiative of starting a shelter home was taken by National Institute of Social Defence (NISD) with the support of few BJP members.
  • Welfare of Trans genders: Centre has set up a plan for five years of Rs500crore which includes scholarships for students, health, livelihood opportunities, welfare homes and other needs.
  • Several initiatives and variations were brought in after the Parliament passed Protection of Rights Act,2019 for Trans genders
  • BJP had recently formed a welfare board for Trans community for which BJP leader Sonam Kinnar was appointed as the vice-chairperson of the welfare. She further also thanked Yogi Ji stating that she will make sure BJP comes back to power in Uttar Pradesh and that Akhilesh Yadav could never come back to power now.

Rattan Lal Kataria in Parliament stated that the government is committed for generate opportunities and livelihood for the Trans community along with allocating funds for them. Free Ration kits had also been distributed via the District administration, in 8 states- medical camps were organized which was attended by 1005 trans genders, Ratan Lal Kataria
