Colombo: Sri Lanka’s Election Commission announced on Friday that the country’s presidential election will be held on Sept. 21.

The Election Commission also announced Aug. 15 as the date of nomination of candidates for the election of the president, according to the gazette notification issued in this regard.

The term of the president expires on Nov. 17, 2024 and the poll for the election of the president shall be taken not less than one month and not more than two months before the expiration of the term of the incumbent president, as stipulated in the constitution, according to the Election Commission.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who won the presidential election in November 2019, resigned from the post in July 2022 amid a severe economic crisis in the South Asian country.

Ranil Wickremesinghe was elected as president in an election held in parliament following Rajapaksa’s resignation.
